Athlete of the Month - August 2009 Wes Hopkins - Kingfish Water Polo

I've had the opportunity to coach Wes Hopkins from the time he was in the third grade to the present time. He will be entering his junior year at Wilson High School in West Lawn, Pennsylvania.

Wes has taken every opportunity that presents itself in becoming a better water polo player and improving his game. He recently made the northeast zone team and was picked to compete for the National Training team for the 1993/1994 age group.

Besides the usual activities that improve his game such as weight lifting, competing and tread sets, what sets Wes apart is a commitment to the sport in future athletes. Wes spends 1-2 days per week in the summer coaching players from 2nd to eighth grade. He is always enthusiastic and positive, along with teaching improved skills to all the players he coaches. During the fall and winter, Wes participates in a number of clinics to introduce the game to younger players and to improve the game of older players.

Wes , along with other classmates, also took over the monumental task of helping to organize a charitable golf tournament to benefit the special education students at his high school. Along with his many other activities, Wes is an Academic All-American for water polo.

His commitment to the sport and his interest in helping future water polo players with persistence & a sense of humor raises Wes above other players. I highly recommend him for the athlete of the month.
