Athlete of the Month - April 2011 Alyssa Woodward - Foothill Water Polo Club

Alyssa is a Senior at Arlington High School in Riverside and has played for the Foothill Club for the past three years. Quick to share a smile, her teammates all praise her for her kindness and sense of humor. They are also very quick to acknowledge her talents as a player and her work ethic. At the close of the 2010 Club Season, her team voted her as the team's "Most Dedicated Player." At Arlington HS, Alyssa is a National Honor Society Scholar and will graduate this June ranked in the top 10% in her graduating class.

Despite not starting water polo until the 8th grade, Alyssa has become an amazing player and the literal definition of a "Utility Player." As a goalie, she was named to the all CIF 2nd Team as a Sophomore and 1st Team All CIF as a Junior as she guided her team to a Division 5 CIF Championship. In addition to her accomplishments as a goalie, in her senior year, depleted by losses to graduation Alyssa was asked to take on responsibilities as a field player splitting time between Center and Goalie. For her efforts, she was named 1st Team All Inland Valley League for the 3rd year in a row and 2nd Team All CIF in 2011. She was honored as the Arlington High School 2011 Female Athlete of the Year.

Alyssa will be continuing her studies and her playing career at Pitzer College where she will play for the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens. She will be playing for a coach that knows her well as Coach Alex Rodriguez also coaches Alyssa for the Foothill Club. Coach Rodriguez is quick to praise Alyssa for her versatility and her incredible potential. "Woody is a gifted athlete that has had success in every aspect of the game she has been asked to take on. As a goalie she has incredible skill but also natural talent for the position. In the field her athleticism allows her to do it all. She can set and guard and we're only scratching the surface of her potential as field player. Last summer we were deep in goal but because of injuries we were short with field players. I decided to try her in the field and she was a natural. I was blessed to coach her with Foothill and I am looking forward to having her at Pomona-Pitzer for the next four years."

In line with her academic success and talents as a water polo player, Alyssa has taken on the challenge of a transition from Foothill's starting goalie to the team's primary center with great enthusiasm and not surprisingly with incredible success. Foothill Club Water Polo is honored to nominate Alyssa Woodward for Athlete of the Month.
