Why is PCA important to USA Water Polo?

The principles of PCA are in perfect alignment with the ethics of USAWP as we strive to honor the sport and all of our participants. PCA can also be a differentiator for our sport among all the youth sports offered. Creating an atmosphere that recognizes and rewards achievement on many levels will keep kids in our sport longer. Also, as we reach down into the younger ages with our Splashball program, it is critical to have our coaches and parents focusing on the proper behaviors to begin shaping the young athlete's mastery of the skills.

PCA and USA Water Polo are pleased to offer workshop discounts for all USA Water Polo organizations. It is a small investment given the life long lessons taught during each course.

About PCA

Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) develops BETTER ATHLETES, BETTER PEOPLE through resources for youth and high school sports coaches, parents, administrators and student-athletes. USA Water Polo has a valuable partnership with PCA to bring these resources to our clubs and members. Together we want to provide tools to members to promote a positive, character-building sports experience. All participants have a role in creating a safe environment in which athletes can grow.

PCA Vision

In a positive youth sports culture, all resources do not flow to the elite level. Athletes have options determined by their ability and interest. Elite athletes compete in "meritocratic" environments in which a place on the team and playing time are determined by ability, performance and effort. Less talented or skilled athletes, or simply athletes who want a different kind of experience, have the option to play in developmental or recreational programs in which they are guaranteed the right to play at least a part of every game.

At every level, players are proud to have their families and friends see them play. Knowing that they are an important part of the team contributes to this proud feeling; their coaches are supportive and do not embarrass them in front of those watching; they are confident that their parents are supportive and will not confront the officials over questionable calls; and ultimately, they know that those watching are proud of them whether or not they win the game.

This positive culture encourages athletes to play multiple sports and never pressures players to specialize in one sport too early in their careers. Coaches resist the urge to pressure their players to give up other sports besides their own, realizing that what might give them the best winning percentage is not always the same as what is in their players' best interest.

Whether you simply want to improve your youth sports experience, or whether your school/organization has directed you to these courses, they will benefit you and the youth you serve! See full list of courses and descriptions here.

*Clicking on a course name leads you to brief demo videos that further explain course content and which PCA National Advisory Board Members - such as Phil Jackson, Doc Rivers, Julie Foudy, Summer Sanders, Dusty Baker and Herm Edwards - appear in videos within the course.
