Huntington Beach, CA - November 28, 2018 - 6-8 Sports (created and run by 2X Olympian, 2X Gold Medalist & Stanford graduate Maggie Steffens & 5X Olympian, Silver Medalist & Stanford graduate Tony Azevedo) and USA Water Polo are excited to announce their collaboration at the Olympic Development Program (ODP) camps this December 1-2 in the Pacific Zone.

The Olympic Development Program serves as a forum to identify and develop athletes to represent USAWP throughout domestic and international competition. 6-8 Sports was founded to improve the use of standardized metrics and advanced data analysis in water polo. John Abdou, USAWP Chief High Performance Officer believes incorporating 6-8 Sports into the ODP will clarify areas of strength and weakness for athletes to work on during camp and take home.

"The collaboration between Maggie, Tony and our ODP staff has been and will be incredibly valuable in the development of our athletes in the pipeline,” said Abdou. “Anytime that you can bring objective measurements into athlete development it’s a win, and to have two of the best players to ever play the game be involved is an even greater win. They represent the best of the USA and the athletes in ODP are trying to reach that level, so it’s an organic collaboration."

During select ODP events, beginning December 1 at Stanford University, the 6-8 Team will run athletes through the 6-8 Challenge: a series of seven water polo drills (for field players and goalies) that measure specific water polo skills. Data collected via the 6-8 Challenge clarifies an individual athlete’s strengths and weaknesses. This helps identify key areas for improvement.

“We are excited to work with USAWP on this project. By adding more technology to our sport, we can use measurable data to help players maximize their game,” said Azevedo. Steffens added, “Tony and I are excited by the potential of a universal measurable to help water polo develop and grow. This sport has given us so much, and we want to pass that forward through 6-8 Sports. The 6-8 Challenge is not only a training & evaluation tool (for myself included!), but also a possible recruiting tool.”
