June 26, 2013

The winner of the S & R Sport Coach of the Month for June 2013 is Jim McMaster of the Pacific Northwest & Hawaii Zone. For winning coach of the month Jim receives a $50 gift certificate to SRSport.com. Below is the nomination submitted by his zone.

For years now Jim has been a dynamic force in coaching in the Northwest. His Chehalem Water Polo Team is one of the premiere programs in the Northwest. They have hosted the Newberg Summer Invitational since the mid 80’s. Jim has been a USAWP coach since 1982 and been a strong influence in the development of the sport. Not only establishing his program but also contributing to various national programs. Three Newberg players have been on the Women’s National Teams as well as nine participating in some fashion on the Women’s Junior National Teams.

Some of his highlights of coaching in USWAP was winning the Junior Olympics 15 & U girls in 1990. He also coached internationally with the USWAP Women's National Teams just prior to women's polo becoming an Olympic Sport. As part of the US coaching staff for women he coached in Brazil, Mexico, and Puerto Rico as well as being an assistant coach in the Men's JR. Team Pan Am games in Venezuela in 2000 where the team placed first.

He has also been a very successful coach for Newberg HS; he started coaching there in 1983. Just take a look at the record - they have won 12 Boys State HS Championships and 18 Girls HS Championships.

However when you get a chance to talk to Jim you realize that his involvement with the sport is not for the records but teaching the fundamentals of life and success.

"I think the highlight of my coaching is not winning all the games and championships, but being able to see players improve and grow in the sport. When kids make that first perfect pass or begin to understand the flow of the game," said McMaster. "That is a triumph for them as well as their coach. I think the best game I ever coached was a ten and under double overtime, sudden death game. Those kids played for the love of the game, and were not as concerned about winning or losing."

Professionally Jim is the Director of the Chehalem Parks and Recreation District. He is happily married to his wife Melody and has 2 sons.
