Water Polo Well Represented On CIF-Southern Section 100 Greatest Athletes List

Four-time Olympian Tony Azevedo was one of five water polo athletes selected to the CIF-SS 100 greatest athletes list

Los Alamitos, CA - April 17 - In honor of their 100th anniversity the California Interscholastic Federation's (CIF) Southern Section has announced their 100 greatest athletes. The list includes some of the greatest athletes in American history in a variety of sports including Jackie Robinson, Tiger Woods, and Cheryl Miller among many others. Water Polo was well represented with five athletes selected, all Olympic medalists. The list recognized Terry Schroeder (San Marcos HS), Maureen O'Toole (Long Beach Wilson HS), Brenda Villa (Bell Gardens HS), Tony Azevedo (Long Beach Wilson HS), and Kami Craig (Santa Barbara HS). All the athletes selected have a great deal of experience with USA Water Polo and the U.S. Olympic Water Polo Teams. Schroeder was a member of four Olympic Teams, winning Silver in 1984 and 1988 along with coaching the men's program in two Olympic Games, winning Silver in 2008. O'Toole was a veteran of the international women's water polo scene when she helped the USA Women to a silver medal at the first ever Olympic Games to include women's water polo in 2000. Villa is the most decorated player in the history of women's water polo, competing in four Olympic Games, winning gold (2012), silver (2000, 2008), and bronze (2004). Azevedo is captain of the Men's National Team and has participated in four Olympic Games, winning silver in 2008. Craig played for Team USA at the last two Olympic Games, winning silver in 2008 and gold in 2012.
