USC Maintains Top Spot In Latest Varsity Top 25 Poll; UC-Irvine Moves Up To Fifth

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- The University of Southern California remains the unanimous top team in the country to highlight the 2017 Women's Varsity Top 25, Division III Top 10, Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Top 10 and CWPA Division III Top Five Week 8/March 8 Polls released today by the CWPA.

USC, which snapped a seven-week run by Stanford University as the top team in the land as the Cardinal ranked at No. 1 in the Preseason, Week 1, Week 2, Week 3, Week 4, Week 5 and Week 6 voting prior to falling to the Trojans by a 10-9 score in overtime at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational title game at the University of California-Irvine, holds its lead at four points over the Cardinal which remain in second place.

There is one change on top of a National Poll this week as Pomona-Pitzer Colleges pulls even with Whittier College for the No. 1 slot in the Division III Top 10.

The University of Michigan (CWPA Top 10) and Washington & Jefferson College (CWPA Division III Top 5) maintain their positions on top of the two CWPA league women's water polo varsity polls this week.

Voted on by a panel of coaches from the CWPA, Western Water Polo Association (WWPA), Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), Big West Conference, Golden Coast Conference, Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the Women's Varsity polls are compiled and released on each Wednesday during the season through the week following the NCAA Championship.

2017 WOMEN'S VARSITY NATIONAL TOP 25 (WEEK 8/MARCH 8)

Defending National Champion the University of Southern California retains the No. 1 ranking as the Trojans top the Week 8/March 8 Women's Varsity National Top 25 Poll.

USC (100 points), which became a unanimous top selection by claiming a 10-9 victory in overtime against formerly No. 1-ranked Stanford University (96 points) during the title game of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational at the University of California-Irvine, remains a unanimous selection as the top team in the nation.

The first four positions in the Top 25 remain unchanged as Stanford, the University of California-Los Angeles (92 points) and the University of California (88 points) remain locks at No. 2-to-4, respectively.

The University of California-Irvine (83 points) and the University of Michigan (79 points) leapfrog Arizona State University (78 points) to take over at No. 5 and 6, with the Sun Devils sliding back to No. 7.

A total of 11 teams make the Top 10 this week due to a tie as the University of Hawaii (72 points) and University of the Pacific (68 points) hold firm at No. 8 and 9, while the duo of Princeton University (58 points) and the University of California-Santa Barbara (58 points) crack the Top 10 by tying for the final position.

San Jose State University (57 points) slips out of the Top 10 to settle at No. 12 with Indiana University (51 points), the University of California-Davis (49 points), Long Beach State University (46 points), the University of California-San Diego (40 points), San Diego State University (38 points), Hartwick College (36 points) and Wagner College (36 points) rating at No. 13-to-19, respectively.

Harvard University (23 points) and California State University-Northridge (23 points) stand tied at No. 20 with Loyola Marymount University (16 points) hanging on at No. 22.  Marist College (10 points) and California State University, Bakersfield (10 points) remain tied at No. 23. 

California Baptist University (3 points) completes the Top 25 once again this week.

2017 WOMEN'S VARSITY DIVISION III TOP 10 (WEEK 8/MARCH 8)

Whittier College acquires some company on top of the Week 8/March 8 Division III Top 10 Poll as the Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer Colleges pull even with the Poets.

Whittier (97 points), which saw its lead retract from seven points to three points over the two previous Division III polls, now share status as the best women's Division III team in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)/varsity collegiate ranks with Pomona-Pitzer (97 points).

The University of La Verne (90 points) shatters a tie with California Lutheran University (82 points) to take over sole possession of the No. 3 spot and drop Cal Lutheran back to No. 4.

Chapman University (81 points) round out the Top Five once again this week, with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (74 points) eeking past the University of Redlands (71 points) to take over at No. 6.  Redlands slips back to No. 7 with Occidental College (66 points) holding firm at No. 8.

Connecticut College (48 points) and Washington & Jefferson College (36 points) trade the No. 9 and 10 spots to complete the Top 10.

2016 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Champion and preseason favorite the University of Michigan remains the No. 1 selection in the Week 8/March 8 CWPA Top 10 Poll.

Indiana University (92 points) jumps ahead of Princeton University (90 points) to take over at No. 2 behind the Wolverines (100 points).  Princeton moves back to No. 3 with Hartwick College (87 points), Harvard University (81 points), Brown University (74 points), George Washington University (71 points), Bucknell University (64 points) and Washington & Jefferson College (45 points) staying at No. 4-to-9, respectively.

Saint Francis University (36 points) jumps back into the Top 10 in the final position, with Connecticut College (35 points) and Macalester College (11 points) also receiving votes.

2017 WOMEN'S CWPA DIVISION III TOP 5 (WEEK 8/MARCH 8)

2014, 2015 and 2016 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Championship runner-up Washington & Jefferson College stays at No. 1 in the Week 8/March 8 CWPA Division III Top Five Poll.

Four-time CWPA Division III Champion (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016) Connecticut College (92 points) remains at No. 2 behind W&J (97 points).  However, the Camels gain company in the runner-up spot as Macalester College (92 points) rises from receiving votes to tie Connecticut at No. 2.

Carthage College (86 points), which fell to Macaelster by a 10-9 count over the weekend at Monmouth College, slides to No. 4 with three-time CWPA Division III Champion (2010, 2011, 2012) Grove City College (35 points) backing up to No. 5.

Monmouth (32 points) and Penn State Behrend (16 points) also received votes.
