New Number One Team In Women's College Water Polo As USC Takes Over Top Spot

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- For the first time since the final poll of the 2016 season, the University of Southern California stands at No. 1 in the Women's National Top 25 to highlight the 2017 Women's Varsity Top 25, Division III Top 10, Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Top 10 and CWPA Division III Top Five Week 7/March 1 Polls released today by the CWPA.

USC's climb to No. 1 snaps a seven-week run by Stanford University as the top team in the land as the Cardinal ranked at No. 1 in the Preseason, Week 1, Week 2, Week 3, Week 4, Week 5 and Week 6 voting prior to falling to the Trojans by a 10-9 score in overtime at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational title game at the University of California-Irvine.

Whittier College (Division III Top 10), the University of Michigan (CWPA Top 10) and Washington & Jefferson College (CWPA Division III Top 5) maintain their positions on top of the other national women's water polo varsity polls this week.

Voted on by a panel of coaches from the CWPA, Western Water Polo Association (WWPA), Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), Big West Conference, Golden Coast Conference, Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the Women's Varsity polls are compiled and released on each Wednesday during the season through the week following the NCAA Championship.

2017 WOMEN'S VARSITY NATIONAL TOP 25 (WEEK 7/MARCH 1)

Defending National Champion the University of Southern California completes a climb back to the No. 1 ranking as the Trojans top the Week 7/March 1 Women's Varsity National Top 25 Poll.

USC (100 points) becomes a unanimous top selection by claiming a 10-9 victory in overtime against formerly No. 1-ranked Stanford University (96 points) during the title game of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational at the University of California-Irvine.

Stanford drops back to No. 2, while the University of California-Los Angeles (92 points), the University of California (88 points), Arizona State University (84 points) and UC-Irvine (80 points) remain at No. 3-to-6, respectively, for another week.

The University of Michigan (76 points) surpasses the University of Hawaii (72 points) in rising to No. 7 and Hawaii drops to No. 8 with the duo of University of the Pacific (67 points) and San Jose State University (56 points) breaking into the Top 10 at No. 9 and 10.

Princeton University (54 points) and the University of California-Santa Barbara (53 points) slide back to No. 11 and 12 with the University of California-Davis (51 points), Indiana University (50 points), Long Beach State University (46 points) and the University of California-San Diego (45 points) remaining locks at No. 13-to-16.

San Diego State University (38 points) slides to No. 17 with Hartwick College (31 points) and Harvard University (28 points) remaining at No. 18 and 19.

California State University-Northridge (24 points) rises to No. 20, Wagner College (22 points) holds on at No. 21, Loyola Marymount University (18 points) drops back to No. 22 with the duo of Marist College (10 points) and California State University, Bakersfield (10 points) tying at No. 23. 

California Baptist University (6 points) completes the Top 25 once again this week.

2017 WOMEN'S VARSITY DIVISION III TOP 10 (WEEK 7/MARCH 1)

Whittier College remains the top-ranked team as the Poets lead the Week 7/March 1 Division III Top 10 Poll.

The lead for Whittier (98 points) retracts from seven points last week to three as the Poets remain in front of Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (95 points).

The University of La Verne (85 points) and California Lutheran University (85 points) enter into a tie at No. 3, with Chapman University (81 points) rounding out the Top Five.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (72 points) and the University of Redlands (72 points) are now tied at No. 6, with Occidental College (69 points) holding firm at No. 8.

Washington & Jefferson College (58 points) and Connecticut College (49 points) trade the No. 9 and 10 spots to complete the Top 10.

2017 WOMEN'S CWPA TOP 10 (WEEK 7/MARCH 1)

2016 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Champion and preseason favorite the University of Michigan is once again the No. 1 selection in the Week 7/March 1 CWPA Top 10 Poll.

Princeton University (92 points) stays at No. 2 as Michigan (100 points) becomes a unanimous top choice and doubles its lead over the Tigers to eight points - a four point increase over last week's 99-to-95 differential.

Few changes occur in the CWPA league voting this week as Indiana University (90 points), Hartwick College (87 points), Harvard University (81 points), Brown University (74 points), George Washington University (71 points) and Bucknell University (64 points) stay at No. 3-to-8, respectively.

Washington & Jefferson College (45 points) rises to No. 9 with Connecticut College (36 points) slipping to No. 10.  Saint Francis University (35 points) also received votes.

2014, 2015 and 2016 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Championship runner-up Washington & Jefferson College stays at No. 1 in the Week 7/March 1 CWPA Division III Top Five Poll.

Four-time CWPA Division III Champion (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016) Connecticut College (95 points) remains at No. 2, while Carthage College (89 points) and three-time CWPA Division III Champion (2010, 2011, 2012) Grove City College (84 points) exchange the No. 3 and 4 spots this week.

Monmouth College (36 points) moves from receiving votes to No. 5 with Penn State Behrend (33 points) and Macalester College (16 points) also receiving votes this week.
