The winner of the S & R Sport Athlete of the Month for January 2014 is Jenna Van Fossen of Hanford High School. To nominate an athlete you think is worthy email media@usawaterpolo.org. For winning, Jenna will receive a $50 gift certificate to SRSport.com. Here is the nomination submitted for Jenna by her coach Linda Wright.

This letter serves as a very enthusiastic recommendation for Jenna Van Fossen. I have known Jenna for 4 years where I have been her coach and mentor. When reflecting on her character, the following words come to mind: brilliant, leader, disciplined, self motivated and humble. It is because of these qualities, I recommend her for the S&R athlete of the month.

Jenna Van Fossen is the epitome of sportsmanship; she brings true meaning to the expression, “Takes one for the team”. She has been the starting Hanford High Girls Water Polo goalie since her freshman year. In her junior year, she earned the CIF Central Section Division 3 MVP, defending 279 blocks during season. She began her senior season in goal, on track to break her Hanford High goalie record. During a regular practice, our center suffered an injury causing her to be sidelined for 6-8 weeks. As a team, we made the decision to move Jenna out of the goal (replacing her with our backup goalie) and into the center position. Jenna flourished, she consistently scored in every game and her defensive pressure was unstoppable. As a result, my team exceeded all expectations, ending our season undefeated from that point forward. Nearing the end of our season, I pulled Jenna aside and said, “I know this season hasn’t gone as you expected. I appreciate you stepping up and helping out the team when I know you miss being goalie. “ Jenna’s response was, “Don’t worry about it Linda, I do miss being goalie but you know I love water polo no matter what position I am playing.” She sacrificed herself for the good of her team. This is just one example of Jenna’s exceptional character. She is a great opponent as well; often times letting the rival players know when they have done something well. Because of Jenna’s unselfishness, our team went on to win back to back Section Titles and finished league undefeated, where she also earned CIF and All League recognition. This was a historical year for Hanford High Girls Water Polo and Jenna undoubtedly was an instrumental player in this accomplishment.

Not only is Jenna an exceptional water polo player, she produces academic excellence. With a 2100 SAT and a 4.5 GPA, she ranks as the number one student for Hanford High’s Class of 2014. She takes on every endeavor with passion and determination. She is the complete package: student, athlete, and humanitarian. Next year, she hopes to attend Cal Berkeley where she will study psychology. Jenna has been a key player in the Ladypup’s success and will be truly missed. It is with great pleasure that I nominate Jenna Van Fossen for this honor. She represents the spirit of Student-Athlete!
