Budapest, Hungary - February 25 - The USA Men's National Team came up short in an 11-5 loss to Hungary earlier today on day two of the Volvo Cup. In a rematch of the Gold Medal game from the 2008 Olympics the Hungarians used a strong first half to distance themselves from Team USA en route to the victory. Ben Hohl (Atherton, CA/Stanford WP) led the USA on offense with two goals and Merrill Moses (Palos Verdes, CA/NYAC) stopped nine shots in net.
Hungary came out strong opening a 3-1 lead in the first period and expanded that to 6-2 by intermission. In the third quarter the United States was able to match the scoring output of Hungary posting three goals, but it still left the red, white, and blue in a 9-5 hole going to the fourth period. In the final frame Hungary tacked on two more scores while keeping the United States off the board for an 11-5 victory.
Team USA went 3/8 on power plays while holding Hungary to just 1/7 on their man advantages. "The guys played with a lot more effort and heart today. We just gave up a few easy goals on some simple mistakes," said USA Head Coach Terry Schroeder.
