Water Polo continues to grow in Atlanta, Georgia as Dynamo Water Polo Club hosted a visit by members of the USA Water Polo Men's Senior National Team at the end of February. The team was in town February 25-28 en route to foreign competition in Germany and Hungary. Members of the 2008 Olympic Team were on the trip as well including Peter Hudnut, JW Krumpholz, Rick Merlo, Head Coach Terry Schroeder and Assistant Coaches Robert Lynn, Ryan Brown, and Rick McKee.
The athletes hosted two different clinics at Georgia Tech University that saw some fifty athletes attend and learn instruction in water polo from some of the world's best. The athletes also visited two local schools and attended a fundraiser reception at ESPN Zone in Atlanta that helped raise 1,000 dollars for the Men's National Team. The trip also helped serve to raise awareness of the sport in an area that has seen recent growth in high school programs.
“Dynamo Water Polo Club and our sponsor PowerBar are thrilled with the great week of water polo in Atlanta,” explained Stuart Sheldon of host Dynamo WPC. “First, fifty high school student athletes and over a dozen coaches and parents advanced their understanding of the game at the clinics. Next, DWPC raised over $1,000 for the Men’s National Team at the ESPN Zone in Buckhead on Friday evening. Finally, hundreds of students at St. Pius X high school and Morris Brandon elementary got inspired by tales of what it means to represent your country at the Olympic Games, how to set personal goals and the importance of proper nutrition and exercise. That sounds like a successful visit to me,” said Sheldon.
